Using therapy to make better decisions
I know a young woman who is petrified of making poor financial decisions, which she frequently does. She is utterly confused about how she keeps making mistakes that cost her so much money. She’s a bright, hard-working woman who earns a good living. Why is she easily swindled out of her money? Why doesn’t she do a better job of protecting her hard-earned cash?
Maybe you do a great job of saving money, or avoiding scams. Even so, who among us is immune to the occasional dumb decision? Haven’t we all wasted money on something? Of course! And if we look closely, we might see a pattern in how we waste money, lose money, or sabotage our own efforts to accumulate money.
One of the benefits of therapy is to raise self-awareness. Raising your self-awareness, in turn, increases your chances of making great decisions with money and anything else that is important to you. How does that work?
Understanding your beliefs and motivations means you can predict your own behavior. You can plan ahead for resisting temptation. You can set yourself up to win instead of fail. You can ask for support at specific times or with specific challenges. All these things make it harder to make mistakes! Especially impulsive mistakes.
Plus, healing past hurts frees you from replaying those old dynamics in your current life. Let’s say you had a father who chased the dream of striking it rich. And let’s say you had an exasperated mother who worked to pay the bills while your dreamer dad was pursuing the next get-rich-quick idea. Now you are an adult and find yourself in a series of relationships with partners who just can’t seem to get their act together. You are the stable, steady force in their lives. You are spending a fortune, over time, keeping these people afloat. If you were in a relationship with a partner who pulled their own weight financially, you’d be living a great lifestyle AND saving for retirement! Hmmm….
You don’t have to be in crisis to come in for therapy. Maybe you just want to get really good at making great decisions!
